DeKalb, IL – Incoming freshman and transfer students at Northern Illinois University will see higher tuition rates this fall. A 9.5-percent increase was approved by the Board of Trustees Thursday. The tuition hike could produce nearly $5-million dollars in extra revenue for the school, which is still waiting on more than $43-million dollars in state aid. The board's student trustee says the move is needed in response to the fiscal crisis. But, he also expressed concern about placing the extra burden on students and their families.
Sycamore, IL – The DeKalb County Board has given the go-ahead for Waste Management to expand its landfill operations in Cortland.
The board voted 16 to 8 before a tense overflow crowd at its meeting last night. Cortland resident Lee Anne Brei held a sign opposing the expansion that would lead to waste from 17 counties being hauled to her town. She says residents have had no voice in the process.
