60-Day Wait For FOID Card

University of Illinois Extension

Illinois officials say there is a two month waitfor a Firearm Owner's Identification card. More than 70,000 FOID card applications have been received so far this month. That's on-track to be a program record.

The Elgin Courier-News reports state police received 338,610 FOID applications last year.

The Champaign News-Gazette reports there about 1.5 million state residents with FOID cards.

What is a FOID card?

The FOID card was created in 1968, by the FOID Act, as a way to identify those persons eligible to possess and acquire firearms and firearm ammunition as part of a public safety initiative in the State of Illinois. The FOID card is NOT a "conceal and carry" card.
