Chicago Police officers face discipline if they don't make sure the video and the audio of their dashboard cameras are working. That’s according to the department's interim superintendent.
The department was harshly criticized when it reported the audio was not functioning on the dashcam that recorded the October 2014 fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald by officer Jason Van Dyke. Days later, the city released four more dashcam videos from other squad cars at the scene … none of which included audio.
Interim superintendent John Escalante told the Chicago Tribune he sent inspectors to do random checks of dashcams. He says they are disciplining officers who did not report technical problems to their supervisors when they found the problems would prevent the equipment from working.
