Chicago State To End School Year Early To Save Money

Chicago State University

Chicago State University has announced the elimination of spring break this year to ensure its students will finish the semester before the school may be forced to close due to a lack of state funding.

University President Thomas J. Calhoun said Tuesday in a memo to faculty and students that the semester will end April 28. It had been scheduled to end May 13.

Illinois' public universities and community colleges haven't received state money since last summer because of the budget stalemate between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats who control the General Assembly.

Chicago State, which has many low-income students, has said it will run out of money next month.

Spokesman Tom Wogan says spending cuts will now allow the university to meet its payroll through March.
