Crews Building First "Green" Tollway Interchange In Northern Illinois

WNIJ

Work is underway on Illinois' first "green" interchange along the tollway system. Crews are building a full interchange along Interstate 90 and Route 47 in Huntley. The construction work will feature several "green" elements.

The work started earlier this year. But an official groundbreaking was held Monday. Tollway director Kristi Lafleur says it will be a model for similar projects in the future.

"That means doing things like geothermal heating and climate control for some of the facilities here along the interchange. It's gonna be an all electronic interchange, so there won't be stopping and starting of vehicles. And you'll have LED lighting going in" Lafleur said.

Existing ramps at the location provide limited access to and from I-90.

The project coincides with plans for a reconstruction of the Jane Addams Tollway, which is scheduled to begin next year.
