Crews Will Begin Clearing Hononegah Dome Remnants

Wikimedia Commons

Demolition crews will begin work this summer on the concrete footprint where the Hononegah High School Dome once stood.

The inflatable dome, which opened in 2002 as a place for school athletic activities, collapsed in a December 2015 snowstorm.

Area voters passed a $17.8 million referendum to replace the dome with a two-story, 80,000 square foot brick-and-mortar field house.

The Rockford Register-Star reportsthat workers will prepare the ground and attempt to save as much of the dome’s infrastructure as possible including the water and gas pumps as well as the structure's footings. Workers expect to finish the new field house by the summer of 2019.
