Cubs Fans To Party Big In Freeport's Little Ballpark

If you couldn’t make it to Chicago Friday to celebrate the Cubs world championship, don’t despair. You’ll get another chance to celebrate Sunday, but on a smaller scale.

There’s a familiar looking baseball stadium in Freeport: ivy-covered brick walls, that old-fashioned scoreboard -- yep, it’s Wrigley, but about one-third the size of the real one. On Sunday, Little Cubs Field will be packedwith people who have waited their whole lives for a world championship. Denny Garkey is vice president of the not-for-profit Wrigley replica. He says they’ve hosted a lot of events at Little Cubs Fieldduring its eight years of existence, but this may be the most emotional and important one ever.

Garkey says he expects to see a sea of blue singing and celebrating at the little ballpark. There’ll be a parade, food, and surprise guests. And most importantly, stories. They’ll turn the microphone over to the crowd so people can talk about what the Cubs World Championship means to them. For Garkey, it means his dad, who died before he could see the day every Cubs fan has lived to see.

The free community celebration is Sunday afternoon from 1:00 – 3:00 at Little Cubs Field, 1160 West Empire St., Freeport.
