DeKalb hotel project may prevent business "leakage"
Construction is nearing for an 80-room, four-story Hampton Inn along I-88 and Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb. Mayor Kris Povlsen says the hotel may keep visitors from leaving the city to stay overnight in neighboring towns.
Povlsen says the proposed hotel is good for the local economy because it will bring in added revenue through hotel taxes in addition to capturing the extra business for DeKalb restaurants and stores.
For Ross Freier, director of Rochelle’s Tourism and Visitor’s Association, it means more competition in the local hotel industry. He says Rochelle often draws in extra hotel guests when NIU hosts large conventions and sporting events.
Construction is set to begin in just a few months. The project's developer says ground will be broken by early July 2012 and estimates the project could be complete by Summer 2013.
