Downers Grove Native Killed In Washington State Fire

A Downers Grove man killed in a wildfire in Washington state last week is remembered as an outgoing adventurer who loved learning new things.

Twenty-six-year-old Andrew Zajac was among three firefighters killed last Wednesday when flames swept over their crashed Forest Service vehicle near the town of Twisp.

U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell says a safety review of the fire is underway.

“As to what actually happened that night? We bring in a team of experts working closely with Washington state DNR to be able to do our review to determined just what happened to determine what we can learn from that situation,” Tidwell said.

Zajac graduated from Downers Grove North High School in 2007. His father runs a dentist office in Downers Grove and his mother is a pastor at a church in St. Charles.
