UPDATE: Three Dead In Rockford Missing Persons Case

Police say they have found the bodies of a missing Rockford woman and her boyfriend. Her estranged husband died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Detectives have been conducting a missing person investigation into the disappearance of Danielle Son, Danielle’s boyfriend, 25-year-old Sergio Quiroz, and her estranged husband, 26-year-old Hand Son.

On Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018, investigators reviewed the investigation with the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office.  As a result, charges were authorized and a warrant was obtained for Hand Son for two counts of Kidnapping.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018 at about 4:00 a.m. detectives located Hand Son’s vehicle, a white 2007 Toyota Sion, travelling near the intersection of 10th Street and 12th Avenue. Detectives began following the vehicle at low speeds while at the same time were able to establish telephone contact with the driver, who was determined to be Hand Son. Detectives attempted to persuade Hand to surrender, but he refused.

Officers and detectives continued to follow the suspect vehicle to the 2500 block of 11th Street where they attempted to perform a traffic stop.  Hand failed to stop and his vehicle then struck an unmarked police vehicle.  The suspect vehicle then drove onto the shoulder on the west side of the street and over a mound of snow that had been deposited there during snow removal. The suspect vehicle then overturned and landed on its roof.

As detectives were approaching the suspect vehicle they heard a single gunshot from inside. Once officers and detectives were able to safely approach the suspect vehicle they located Hand Son inside with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Hand Son was transported to a local hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. Detectives recovered a handgun from the vehicle believed to have been used by Hand.

Shortly after the vehicle crash detectives, acting on information received during the investigation, responded to Blackhawk Park, 101 15th Avenue.  At that time detectives located the remains of two individuals later determined to be Danielle Son and Sergio Quiroz. Cause of deaths are pending the outcome of autopsies by the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office.

This is an on-going investigation and no further details are available at this time.  Further information will be released should it become available.
