Freeport’s city-wide boil order has been lifted. A major water main break at the city’s primary water treatment plant early Monday morning led to the order. The break was contained by early afternoon, but protocol in such instances mandates a 24-hour testing period afterward to ensure the water in the system is safe to use.
Several restaurants closed Monday because of the problem. Freeport Schools and Aquin Catholic School cancelled classes for Tuesday, but said after-school activities would go one as scheduled.
The boil order was issued for the entire city after officials found a break around 7 a.m. Monday morning in a water main at Freeport's primary water treatment facility.
The Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois in Freeport closed Monday morning at 9 a.m. because of the issue.
Connie Kraft is Member Service Director at the YMCA.
"It sounded like it was going to be a lot longer than what it took them to get it fixed so we made that call and canceled classes. We called several employees, so we just felt it was best if we just stayed close all day," Kraft said.
Kraft says the water would be tested, and the facility was open on Tuesday.
