Republicans and Democrats alike are remembering Judy BaarTopinka.

The state comptroller died last week after complications from a stroke.

Topinka was a Republican who was supported by labor unions and endorsed same-sex marriage.

At her memorial service Wednesday- Governor-elect Bruce Rauner said he got to know Topinka during his campaign - when he frequently criticized unions.

Topinka’s memorial service - was at a union hall in Chicago’s southwest suburbs.

That was not lost on Rauner.

“And I bet, too, she’s probably chucklin’ a little bit to see me standing, talking in Local 150 hall,” Rauner said.

There’s currently a debate over how to fill the vacant comptroller’s office since Topinka died after re-election.

Rauner has said he wants to appoint the next comptroller once he takes office in January.

Speakers noted her pitbull personality - always looking for a good deal.

Nancy Kimme was Topinka’s long-time friend and chief-of-staff.

She shared the podium at today’s memorial with past - and future - governors.

Kimme spoke of Topinka’s love for thrifting - and estate sales.

“And you were never allowed to pay full price. Even if something only cost a dollar, she will lose all respect for you if you ended up walking out of there paying more than 50 cents,” Kimme said.
