Geneva Lawmaker Will Not Seek Re-Election, Cites Partisan Tension

Steven Andersson

Another Republican State Representative from northern Illinois has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2018.

Steven Andersson of Geneva was a leader of the GOP revolt that gave Illinois its first budget in more than two years. He cited an increasingly political and partisan atmosphere in Springfield.

Andersson issued a public statement Wednesday on Facebook.

"Even within the time I have served in Springfield, the temperament of my party has shifted, and the Republican Party values I grew up with seem to be increasingly absent or changing," he wrote. "At this point, I believe that my advocacy will be stronger outside the chamber than within. There are others who are better suited to the current partisan politics of this chamber."

Andersson was one of a dozen Republicans who voted for a Democrat budget bill and income tax increase in July. Shortly thereafter, he was deposed as the House Republican floor leader.
