Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed a mobile phone consumer protection bill.
The Geolocation Privacy Protection Act would require explicit consent from mobile phone users when companies want to use their geographical data gathered from mobile apps. Only then could companies collect, use, and sell this information.
Advocates for the bill said it would protect consumer privacy and provide transparency on data collection. However, Rauner’s office said it would “result in job loss across the state without materially improving privacy protections for Illinoisans or making devices and their apps safer for children.”
