Illinois Advises Equifax Hack Victims To Freeze Credit Reports

The Illinois Attorney General's office has received many calls about the Equifax data breach and has some advice for consumers.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan says with all the recent data breaches in recent years, it's only a matter of time before one's identity is stolen. For victims of the Equifax breach, she suggested first putting a freeze on their credit report.

"The second thing you really need to do is monitor your credit more, and you can do that by getting the free annual credit reports you're entitled to from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus," she said.

More that five million Illinoisans are believed to be affected by the breach. If you suspect you're one of them, visit Equifax's website.
