Illinois House Votes To Override FOIA Veto

State of Illinois

The Illinois House voted Tuesday to override Gov. Pat Quinn’s veto on a measure dealing with the Freedom of Information Act. The plan gives governments more time to respond to certain citizens' requests, and can charge them up to $100 for some information.

In his veto message, Quinn said the bill reduces government transparency. Now, the Senate will decide if they agree.

The General Assembly also began to advance one of Quinn's last requests--a minimum wage hike. A Senate committee passed a plan to bring it to $10 an hour beginning in July.

The sponsor of ride-sharing legislation is also giving up his bid to override Gov. Quinn's veto to tighten regulation of services such as Uber and Lyft. State Rep. Mike Zalewski says he is working with Uber on a new bill and hopes to introduce it for the January session.

The new bill would offer only a fraction of the changes the original had. It includes drivers obtaining chauffeur’s licenses when they work more than 20 hours per week.

Legislators will take a break at the end of today's sessions. They are scheduled to return Dec. 2.
