Indiana Governor Urges Lawmakers To Fix Religious Freedom Law

Indiana Public Media

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence wants legislators to fix a controversial law by the end of the week.

That comes as pressure continues to mount for an economic boycott of the state.

Pence continued to blame the media for spreading misinformation about a Religious Freedom law that he says cannot be used to discriminate against gay people.

He says he wants legislators to draft language to make that message clear and he wants it in two days just as the NCAA’s men's Final Four gets underway in Indianapolis.

Pence says although he will not push for legal protections for the LGBT community, he says he doesn't "support discrimination against gays or lesbians or anybody else."

"I abhorred discrimination," Pence said. "No one should be harassed or mistreated because who they are, who they love or what they believe."

The Republican governor signed the bill into law last week as a way to protect the religious liberties of Hoosiers from government overreach. Democrats say Pence should scrap the law entirely.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Hammond, Indiana says Pence should resign for quote “the good of Indiana.”
