Kane County Inmate Killed By SWAT Officer After Holding Geneva Nurse Hostage

A man being held by Kane County authorities was killed by a SWAT team Saturday after he took a Geneva hospital nurse hostage.

Inmate Tywon Salters had been in Kane County custody since April 11, when he was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle. He was undergoing treatment at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva under an armed guard on a rotating shift.

Salters stole the gun from a corrections officer Saturday, the Chicago Tribune reports, and took a nurse hostage at 1 p.m. There are conflicting reports over whether one or two nurses were taken. Police negotiated throughout the afternoon, but talks broke down about 4 p.m., when the local SWAT team decided to enter the room.

An officer shot and killed Salters in the confrontation, but the nurse was unharmed.

The hospital was under lockdown until Saturday evening. The incident is being investigated by the Kane County Sheriff's Office and Illinois State Police.
