Federal officials say more than 297,000 Illinois residents have signed up and paid for private health insurance on the marketplace created by President Barack Obama's health care law.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said Tuesday that nearly 78 percent of those Illinois consumers are getting a tax subsidy to help them with the cost. The average monthly subsidy in Illinois is $212.
The midyear report is the first update since June on how the law's insurance markets are performing across the nation. The enrollment figures cover the period through June 30.
The new Illinois total of 297,406 is roughly 3,700 higher than the administration reported as the state's enrollment through the end of March. Fluctuation is expected as people drop or add coverage when their circumstances chance.
In Wisconsin, nearly 90% of those getting health insurance under “Obamacare” get the tax credits, placing them in the top ten among all states. There’s another big difference between neighbors: Wisconsin residents are averaging $312 a month in ACA tax credits. In Illinois, that subsidy is, on average, $100 lower.
