Seniors and disabled people can now apply to a state heating program. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, provides payments to offset winter heating bills. Program official Gail Hedges says applicants need to visit their local service agency, bringing utility bills and proof of income.
"The intake workers will go through an application process and have that completed. Then our automated system will determine whether they're eligible for the program, and also the benefit level they will receive," she said.
The application period for families with young children begins in October.
More information on the program can be found at its website.
