The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department warns scammers are calling residents. They’re impersonating officials from the Sheriff’s Office or U.S. Attorney’s Office in Rockford.
They are threatening citizens with a warrant for failure to appear before a Grand Jury. People are then given an 800 number to call to transfer money.
“Hang up, ignore them” advises Detective Mike Schultz, “And then report to us, the phone number that it came in on. Usually people have caller ID and if they can jot that number down before hanging up, calling us and reporting it and we’ll do they follow up.”
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department number is 815-319-6317. Schultz says there doesn’t appear to be any specific group being targeted.
