Many Illinois Law Enforcement Agencies Are Participating In Labor Day Weekend Road-Safety Campaign

Illinois State Police

Nearly 200 law enforcement agencies in Illinois will participate in a statewide Labor Day road-safety campaign this holiday weekend. Illinois transportation officials say that includes the Rockford and DeKalb police departments, along with those in LaSalle, Freeport and Sterling.

State police officials say law enforcement will conduct DUI and seatbelt checks as part of the campaign.

Matt Boerwinkle, an Illinois State Police sergeant, says the agency is expecting record-breaking travel numbers this weekend.

“This is the last weekend of summer, and folks are going to want to spend time with their friends and family, and so they’ll be taking to the highways to get to see their friends and so forth,” Boerwinkle said. “And so we want everyone to arrive safely at their destination.”

Some agencies, like the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, are among a handful of law enforcement agencies not doing anything out of the ordinary with patrols this weekend. Sheriff officials say drivers should still exercise caution regardless and obey traffic laws.
