City planners in Elgin are giving the green light to a medical marijuana dispensary. The planning and zoning commission approved a proposal that calls for setting up the facility on Elgin's southwest side. The Daily Herald reports neighboring businesses raised concerns about vandalism and crime. But the company behind the plan, Chicago-based Salveo Health & Wellness Ltd., insists there will be enough security measures in place to curb any criminal activity in the area.

Illinois' medical marijuana pilot program went into effect January 1, 2014. The law allows up to 21 growers and 60 dispensaries. But officials are still working to open the application process for those licenses.

According to the Quincy Journal, Salveo Health & Wellness is proposing additional medical marijuana dispensaries in Rockford and Quincy. The company is also proposing growing centers in Quincy and near Roseville.
