National Take Back Day

By Susan Stephens

DeKalb, IL –
A recent study showed 70% of people who abuse prescription pain medications got them from a friend or relative. Tomorrow is "National Take Back Day." It's a chance to safely get rid of unused or expired drugs.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is leading the effort to get potentially harmful drugs out of medicine cabinets. They're hoping that will keep the drugs out of the hands of people who might abuse them and keep them out of the water supply, since it's common for people to flush leftover drugs.

Police and Sheriff's departments are collecting the drugs between 10 am and 2 pm. In our region, you can take your unwanted drugs to police departments in a number of cities, including DeKalb, Roscoe, Sterling, Woodstock, Argyle, Dixon, and Geneva. The Drug Enforcement Administration has a Take Back Day locator on its website, so you can type in your zip code and find the nearest collection site.
