New List Of Endangered Historic Sites In Illinois

Several northern Illinois sites are on the latest list of endangered historic places. On Tuesday, the preservation advocacy group Landmarks Illinois announced the 10 sites in fear of continued decay or demolition.

Among them is Camp Algonquin in McHenry County, the McAuley Schoolhouse in West Chicago, and the U.S. Marine Hospital in Galena.

Landmarks Illinois President Bonnie McDonald says each site is different in its needs for preservation. But she says overall, they're worried that private dollars might be hard to come by in the future. That's because a federal tax credit for such donations is on the chopping block in Congress.

McDonald says her organization has an 80-percent success rate in preserving historic sites across Illinois.
