New WNIJ/WNIU Visitor Center Honors Former General Manager

Family, friends, and community members joined Northern Public Radio Thursday evening to dedicate a portion of the station's DeKalb location to Tim Emmons, station manager from 1995 to 2012.

The Tim Emmons Memorial Visitors Center features station memorabilia, access to audio archives, and a cozy meeting place. It's also a starting and ending place for community tours of the station. Visitors also got a look at the future Studio A, a large space originally set up to allow for a recording studio.

Northern Illinois University President Doug Baker and Vice President Anne Kaplan spoke to the crowd at the dedication Thursday. General Manager Staci Hoste hosted the event.  Kaplan said she once told Emmons that if you work at a university for a long time, you learn a lot about people.

Chances are they are going to work with a lot of smart people, a lot of good people, and a few people whose reputations go well-beyond the campus. But you don't work with very many people who fit all of those categories. But Tim did.

Susan is an award-winning reporter/writer at her favorite radio station. She's also WNIJ's Perspectives editor, Under Rocks contributor, and local host of All Things Considered.
