The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education have named NIU Professor Daniel Gebo as the 2014 Illinois Professor of the Year. The award salutes individuals for excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring.
Gebo, who holds a joint appointment in anthropology and biological sciences, says he has always tried to make a difference in ALL his students’ lives.
“I would hope that they’re able to think a little clearer. I work very hard with them about their writing. I think good thinking equals good writing. And I want them to think big. And so I want them to be successful.”
Each year since 1981, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education have recognized outstanding undergraduate instructors at different levels from each state, as well as a National Professor of the Year.
Gebo says he tries to be a positive influence on his students, whenever and wherever he can.
“You’ll laugh, but I probably spend more time at the rec center on the basketball courts mentoring students than I do in my office.”
Gebo and this year's other winners will be recognized Thursday, Nov. 20, during an awards luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
