NIU Homecoming Events Begin This Week

Homecoming events are set to kick off this week at Northern Illinois University.

The Huskies will play against Eastern Michigan at 2:30 p.m. this Saturday. As a warm up, NIU students are welcome to tailgate at The Yard.

The spirit of Homecoming is expanding beyond game day.

Huskies are ready to light the way in celebration of the Stadium’s 50th anniversary. NIU’s Northern Lights Homecoming parade will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday. Following the 1965 theme of “Northern Lights the Way,” spectators are encouraged to wear light-up and glow items as well.

Events will include more than 50 entries decorated with lights; spectators are able to participate in judging the entries. A special text-in voting mechanism will be featured during the parade.

NIU’s Marching Band, DeKalb High School Cheerleaders, and 1965 Homecoming Queen Sue Corrao will be part of the celebration.

It’s not too late to sign up for NIU’s Sixth Annual Homecoming 5K Run/Walk on Saturday. Participants will take off from the Student Recreation Center and wind through campus starting at 7:45 a.m.

The cost is $25 before Thursday, and $30 to sign up Saturday. There will be giveaways, awards for winners, and a door prize raffle.

Parking spaces will be limited between 10 p.m. Wednesda through the end of Thursday. Parking lot 3, located south of Jack Arends Hall and the Music building, will be reserved for homecoming festivities.

Blue and yellow permit holders will be asked to relocate to other lots. Blue permit holders will not be ticketed for parking in yellow spaces. Those who have Reserved Parking spaces will be allowed to park in the Visitor Lot on Carroll Avenue at no charge.
