NIU Huskie Food Pantry To Open For Academic Year

The Huskie Food Pantry is once again opening to help Northern Illinois University students in need.

The pantry, which helps NIU students without a meal plan obtain healthy food consistently, was started independently by NIU Career Services staff member Katherine Zuidema.

"It started in 2014 out of the graces of her good heart,” said Liz McKee, NIU Assistant Community Service Director. “She came to the university this year and we picked it up."

The pantry -- now a full-fledged university charity -- operated on a pop-up basis over the summer and served about 30 students; and during the academic year, it attracted around 70 regular patrons.

McKee said she expects more patrons with the increasing student population. The pantry begins yearly operations Sept. 5 on the south side of the Chick Evans Fieldhouse.  The pantry will be Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. each week until throughout the school year.

More information on the program can be found on the Huskie Food Panty web page.
