NIU Will Ban Concealed Weapons On Campus

NIU

Over the summer, Illinois became the last state to allow properly licensed individuals to carry concealed weapons. But NIU officials say that, even if their students or employees eventually obtain a permit, they still can't carry a concealed weapon on campus.

The law says the practice is prohibited in all buildings owned or leased by a college or university, as well as parking areas and sidewalks under a college or university’s control.

However, schools do have some flexibility when it comes to establishing rules for storage and maintenance of firearms. That includes designated areas for parked vehicles that have a gun stored inside.

Illinois State Police officials continue to develop their system for issuing permits, which will not be available until early next year. NIU officials say they will continue to examine the legislation and issue a formal policy regarding concealed-carry in the near future.
