Northern Illinois Blood Centers Ask Donors To Step Up Around Thanksgiving

Heartland Blood Centers, which cover 13 cities in northern Illinois including DeKalb and Crystal Lake, says it needs more donors as people travel for Thanksgiving and become busier.

Sheri Ransford, with the Heartland Blood Centers, says the urgency for donations isn’t because of a common assumption.

"It’s not that there’s more accidents or anything," Ransford said. "There’s a bigger, greater need at the hospitals because a lot of people will schedule elective surgeries over their breaks."

Ransford says every donation matters, regardless of when it is.

“They really are saving a life, or they’re enhancing," Ransford said. "A lot of the blood donations will go to help cancer patients, help replace their blood cells as they’re undergoing chemo, and you’re just improving the quality of life."
