Northern Illinois river project gets a thumbs up from feds

Federal officials have recognized local efforts to improve areas along a northern Illinois river. The Pecatonica River Water Trail improvement is one of 11 projects highlighted by the the Department of Interior.

Joe Ginger is president of the Friends of the Pecatonica River Foundation.  He says they had a simple message when they put their plan together.

"We have a river right here in Stephenson County that would really be a great recreational opportunity and an economic opportunity for tourism" Ginger said.

Ginger says the focus is to create more access along the river for recreation.  The project also includes conservation and restoration efforts.

The federal recognition does not provide any grant money.  Ginger says his group will continue working with other organizations to secure funding.
