Northern Illinois University is reviewing its operations and programs as it deals with declines in enrollment and state revenue.
The review is expected to take a year, according to Provost Lisa Freeman, who presented the university's goals during two town hall-style events on the DeKalb campus.
Freeman said cuts, mergers, and other changes are possible for many programs.
The university expects to get $93 million from the state this fiscal year, which is less than a quarter of its budget. State spending on public universities has been declining across the country for years.
NIU has about 19,000 students. That's a decrease of about 2.6 percent from the
spring 2014 semester.
