PARCC Results Still Not In, But Can Help In Parent-Teacher Discussion

understandthescore.org

It’s been about six months since students took the PARCC exam. Despite officials saying the tests will be graded by the end of the school year, results are not yet posted.

Illinois high schools are expected to receive test results in the next couple of weeks, and schools should receive test results from 3rd through 8th grades by the beginning of next month. That’s according to an Illinois State Board of Education memo.

Laura Bay – the president of the National Parent-Teacher Association – says parents should take these results as an opportunity to discuss the test standards.

“I want to encourage every parent to check out the resources, to look at the score report and to make sure they’re having conversations to make this year a successful year for their child as they continue learning,” Bay said.

Bay says parents should first visitweb resources to understand test results.

“And then they would go to their child’s school and talk with their teacher and say, ‘I see that my student was weak in the area of application in mathematics and reasoning. How can I help my student get better at that?’” Bay said.

Bay says students will fall in one of five categories for both mathematics and language arts, ranging from “Did Not Meet Expectations” to “Exceeded Expectations.”

Preliminary results show many students performed either average or below average. Few students fell in the “exceeded expectations” category.
