Primary Election Turnout Expected To Be Low

Illinois State Board of Elections

Hundreds of thousands of Illinoisans will participate in the primary elections today.  That's just a small fraction of Illinois' registered voters.

State election officials say, before a primary, there's usually an uptick in phone calls and complaints.

Jim Tenuto is with the Illinois State Board of Elections. He says that hasn't happened this time around.

"And it's not just our office. I think speaking to other election authorities throughout the state, they've kind of said the same thing: That it just seems very quiet," Tenuto said.

Tenuto says about 23 percent of registered voters participated in the last two big primary elections. He says while there's no way to predict turnout, early voting is down by more than 14 percent from 2012.

Democrats will be deciding whether to re-nominate the incumbent governor.

Most of the attention is on the Republican side, where there are contested races for U.S. Senate, state treasurer, and by far the most expensive contest this year -- the nomination for Illinois governor.
