Quinn, Legislative Leaders To Talk Pensions

BRIAN MACKEY / NPR ILLINOIS

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn says he’ll be meeting with legislative leaders Monday to discuss pension reform.  Lawmakers adjourned for the summer without agreeing on the best way to reduce benefits for state employees.

Quinn says that cost is cutting into other state expenses.

This should be done by the legislators. They are elected by the people to do their job. I’m ready to do my job, which is to sign it into law. The legislators must work together to forge an agreement that can come on my desk so I can sign it into law and we can resolve this issue. -Governor Pat Quinn

Quinn called lawmakers back to Springfield for a special session later this month.

But several state politicians say that session could be pointless - if the leaders don’t agree on a plan to address pension expenses.
