Gov. Bruce Rauner says a U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing labor unions to collect fees from non-members is "tragic'' and a lawsuit aimed at banning the practice in Illinois will continue.
Justices on Tuesday divided 4-4 in a California case over whether public workers represented by a union can be required to pay "fair share'' fees.
It's a big win for unions, who say the money covers collective bargaining costs.
The Republican governor has tried to end the fees. He and three state employees filed a federal lawsuit in Chicago, arguing the fees are unconstitutional.
The lawsuit has been on hold pending the outcome of the California case.
Rauner said Tuesday ``we will just continue the fight.'' He says he expects the Illinois case to reach the Supreme Court.
