Rockford aldermen say they’ll ask the Cliffbreakers Riverside Hotel and Conference Center to bolster their security staff before releasing funds for a federal loan.
A gunfight broke out on the property on New Years Day, resulting in one person, 34-year-old Joshua Jamerson, dying of his wounds, and three others hospitalized. This follows a similar incident in October when more than 20 gunshots were fired in the property's parking lot.
The Register-Star reportsCliffbreakers has been in and out of bankruptcy court and faced foreclosure in 2012. It was bought by Aries Capital in 2014, and the group hopes to use a federal Housing and Urban Development loan to remodel rooms and lobby areas.
Rockford Community and Economic Development Director Tom Cagnozzi says the money hasn't been released because the hotel hasn't yet provided a complete title of "existing encumbrances" and a "complete appraisal."
