Schnucks Closing Two Rockford Stores

Schnucks

Grocery-chain Schnucks is closing two Rockford locations. The company says the stores at South Alpine and Rural Street will close at the end of May. More than a hundred workers will be offered positions at neighboring Schnucks stores.

In addition to the store closings, Schnucks closed the in-store restaurants within its two largest stores at East State and at Loves Park.

From a news release:

"Schnuck Markets, Inc. announced plans to permanently close the Alpine (2514 S. Alpine Road at Harrison, 61108) and Rural (1715 Rural Street, 61107) stores at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014.  All 139 teammates (84 at Alpine and 55 at Rural) will be offered positions at neighboring Rockford Schnucks stores prior to the closings.

Company leaders say low sales and the costly operation of these two older, smaller facilities factored heavily into this decision.  In addition to the store closings, Schnucks today closed the in-store restaurants and restructured related areas within its two largest stores resulting in the elimination of 15 full- and part-time positions at East State and nine full- and part-time positions at Loves Park."
