Today is the 50th anniversary of one of the most important milestones in America's civil rights movement: on August 28th, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech to 200,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C.
Jane McAfee of Rockford was one of those civil rights activists who was listening that day at steps of the Lincoln Memorial. McAfee and her colleagues from the National YWCA took part in the March on Washington and ended up near the stage for the day full of speeches calling for the end of racism in the United States.
McAfee eventually ended up in Rockford, where she served as the YWCA's executive director. Here's her essay about that historic day in 1963: this first aired on WNIJ in 2005.
