The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help locating a vehicle investigators say was involved in a fatal shooting that happened in the CherryVale Mall parking lot last month.

The vehicle is a gold or tan GMC Yukon. It is the SUV from which shots were fired Feb. 23, in what Sheriff Gary Caruana described as a “drive-behind.”

Ricky Smith, 31, of DeKalb, was killed in the shooting while driving his car near a mall entrance. The SUV was following Smith’s vehicle.

Anyone with information about the vehicle is urged to contact the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department at 815-319-6900 or Rockford Area Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867.
