Small Business Owners Hope Shoppers Rally For 'Small Business Saturday'

Small business owners are hoping shoppers aren’t too fatigued to participate in Small Business Saturday. The retail day was a promotion started by American Express in 2010, and it’s made modest growth since.

Teresa Kirschbraun is the owner of City Lit Books in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. She says sales definitely increased during Small Business Saturdays in the past.

"Every year we’ve seen a great response. I think anytime we put out any sort of promotion that encourages people to shop local, think about small businesses and what it means to a community, they rally."

Small Business Saturday isn’t likely to reach the levels of Black Friday. According to American Express, Small Business Saturday generated $5.7 billion nationally last year--more than a 3 percent growth from 2012.
