South Beloit Considering Contracting Police Services With Winnebago County

South Beloit is debating whether to contract police services with the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department.

The option is being considered due to a continuing drop in city revenue.

The Rockford Register-Star reports South Beloit collected about $700,000 less in sales taxes this year compared with 2008.

The city currently pays $1.5 million for police, but Mayor Ted Rehl outlined three caveats for any future agreement with Winnebago County.   He says all city officers should have a job after a transition, their years of seniority must be recognized, and service must not be compromised.

The Winnebago County Board and South Beloit residents would need to approve any deal with the Sheriff's Department.
