State Election Officials Test Ballot Systems

State elections officials are running tests in advance of the election.

Director of Illinois' Elections Board, Rupert Borgsmiller, says trial runs of ballot-counting at ten jurisdictions statewide should be finished this week.

Borgsmiller says mistakes can undercut confidence in the elections system.

"That's why we go out, to the election authorities and take their ballot styles, and we run tests to make sure we prepare the test, that way we know what the totals are, and so when we run them through their tabulators, they'd better - they should - come up with the results that we have."

Local officials -- not the state -- actually conduct elections.

Early voting began on Monday (10/20), and a few problems have arisen.  It's believed that a voting machine in suburban Cook County was miscalibrated. And there were printing errors involving a local race on the ballot in Rockford. Early voting continues through Nov. 2.
