Sycamore Daycare Owner Fears Budget Cuts

State of Illinois

Illinois’ Governor and state lawmakers face a multi-billion dollar budget shortfall. Possible solutions include cuts to state programs.  Some recipients are preparing to fight back.

Michele Baker-McElroy is the owner of Once Upon a Time Childcare facility in Sycamore.   She’s concerned about the loss of funding that helps keep her business running.

"Our facility serves 78 children which ninety percent are funded through the childcare assistance program," said McElroy.

McElroy says that she’s worried their future is uncertain, and the feeling is all too familiar.

"Well I know in the past when we went through something similar but not as huge as this crisis in 2012, they were able to appropriate different funding from different other entities into the childcare program to help appropriate and that’s how we were able to get the supplemental we needed in 2012."

McElroy also says having the funding keeps children in the community learning and parents working to make positive contributions to society.

"This is a huge trickle effect and it will cost more because unemployment will go up as well as other assistance as far as food stamps and housing."

McElroy says she is unsure about her faith in the elected government officials, because programs continue to be slashed.

"We’re going to Springfield for a rally in hope to meet our legislators and just let them know how important this program is to so many families So we’re praying for a positive outcome so we can keep our doors open."

A group of providers and parents from throughout the region is meeting Thursday to head to the state capitol.
