A Chicago non-profit dedicated to getting rape kits tested is sending sample kits out today to every governor in the country.
Julie Smolyansky describes herself as a survivor of sexual assault.
She and her husband co-founded the non-profit Test400k to draw attention to this country’s estimated 400,000 untested rape kits.
"It’s the biggest scandal that is happening in the United States," Smolyansky said, "with investigations around sexual assault over the last 30 years in every single state and every city."
Smolyansky said she's hoping for a particular type of response from the governors. "I do hope that they have sort of a visceral reaction like so many of us who have seen them," she says.
Smolyansky wants governors to sign a pledge to push for testing of all new rape kits within 30 days.
