Topinka's Son Sues For Late Comptroller's Retirement Funds

The son of late Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka is suing for more than $60,000 in contributions she made to the state retirement system.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports Joe Topinka filed the lawsuit last week in Sangamon County Circuit Court. He's seeking to overturn a General Assembly Retirement System ruling that found he shouldn't get the money.

The ruling said that's because Topinka was paid more in retirement benefits than she contributed over her life.

Joe Topinka is a married father of a 6-year-old daughter. He says his mother had said the money she put into her pension fund could help her grandchild with education expenses.

Topinka died Dec. 10, 2014 at age 70.

This is Joe Topinka's second lawsuit about his mother's money. A judge dismissed a previous lawsuit.
