U of I Football Coach Fired Days Before Season Starts

Fired University of Illinois football coach Tim Beckman says the findings of an investigation, showing he interfered with medical procedures and pressured players to play hurt, are “utterly false.”

In a statement, Beckman also suggests he might take legal action. He says U of I’s decision to fire him violated his contract. Beckman’s firing was announced Friday afternoon.

U of I Athletic Director Mike Thomas says the investigation’s preliminary findings showed enough evidence that Beckman needed to be dismissed.

“I want to be clear that the health and well-being of students is our top priority and this decision was based on the health and well-being of our student athletes,” Thomas said. “The findings do not reflect the culture we are building in Illinois athletics.”

Thomas told reporters he was “shocked and angry” by the allegations. That’s what led to his swift decision.

The allegations started in May, when a former lineman said on Twitter Beckman and his staff tried to shame him into playing hurt.

Bill Cubit, who’s been on the football staff since 2013, will serve as interim coach. The Illini open their season Friday night against Kent State.
