In the coming months, there could be a new water source for residents in a tiny northern Illinois town dealing with contamination issues.

The U.S. EPA says it's looking at a local park in the town of Wedron to dig deeper wells. Those wells would serve as an alternative water supply for nearly ten homes that have tested positive for elevated levels of benzene and other harmful chemicals.

The agency says it still needs to determine if it is safe enough to dig the deeper wells.

The EPA has long said there could be several possible sources of the contamination. Officials say they are spending $500,000 dollars to address the matter.

Wedron, an unincorporated town in LaSalle County, has a history of groundwater contamination problems that date back to the 1980's.
