Margie Mullins has served in Winnebago County Government for 36 years, 11 of them as County clerk. That will come to an end on January 31, according to a resignation letter she submitted last week.
?Mullins previously had stated she wasn't seeking re-election, but her current term wasn't set to expire until next November. ?She cited "personal reasons" for stepping down early.
?Winnebago County Board Chairman Frank Haney said in a news release that he was "sad to see her go early" and that she been a "good partner" to him as Chairman.
The County Board is required to fill the vacancy with a Democrat within 60 days.
?Haney said he is opposed to filling the seat with any candidates currently running for County Clerk.
?Prospective appointees must be registered voters and be able to show evidence of Democratic party affiliation.
